Building a capsule wardrobe: How to style your basics

Building a capsule wardrobe: How to style your basics

Coming out of a two-year lockdown, many of us are facing the same daunting task: rebuilding our wardrobe. We’ve been stuck at home for so long and have had little to no opportunities to go all out and get dressed up. Even if we haven’t been able to wear them, it’s easy to become sick of the clothes you’ve had hanging up in the wardrobe for the best part of two years.

So where do you start? The secret to creating a whole new look with minimal effort is making sure you have all the basics. Staple jeans, plain tees, a few comfy knits and a gorgeous midi dress can be a good starting point. Perhaps a dressy blazer and a pair of comfy leather trousers as well.

Once you have the basics down you’ll find you have an endless array of outfits that you can mix and match!

Bottoms

We all have that one pair of jeans that we’ve found ourselves rooting through the wash-basket for because no other pair will do. Finding that favourite pair can be great, but it’s also a good idea to have some backup options just in case. Having at least one pair of blue denim and black denim is important, in whichever style you feel most comfortable in. You’ll also find that investing in a few pairs of dressy trousers is a lifesaver when you’re in a rush to put together a stand-out outfit. We have plenty of options that will quickly become the foundation of any outfit!

Basic Tops

Once you build a collection of tops in a mix of neutral basics and a few bright colours or patterns, you’ll find it even easier to put together an outfit. Having a selection of neutrals means that you’ll always have a top to go with whatever bottoms you choose. Plus they’re great for layering, which means you can create various outfits from the same few pieces.

The spring/summer season can also be a great time to inject some colour into our wardrobes. A bright colour or bold pattern is an easy but fun way to jazz up an otherwise plain outfit. Oftentimes, a top is dressy enough that it is the outfit, and all you need is a pair of plain bottoms to match!

Knitwear

While we’re transitioning between the seasons, the weather can be quite unpredictable, and even in the warmer seasons (especially in Ireland), there will always be days where we want to wrap up in a cozy knit. We have a wide array of knitwear in a gorgeous spring colour palette, from cute jumpers to warm and soft cardigans.

Staple Dresses

For the days where you want to look like you’ve made an effort, without actually making an effort, a midi dress is the answer. Style any midi dress with a pair of trainers, or chunky boots for an instant outfit, or if you’re going that bit dressier, just swap them out for a pair of classic heels. Whatever style you are looking for, whether it’s long sleeves or short, a bright and colourful pattern or a more toned-down muted design, we have them all in our collection!

Loungewear

Of course, no wardrobe would be complete without those lazy day essentials, and we have you covered! Since lockdown, loungewear is in in a massive way, and we’re seeing more and more dressy pieces styled with comfy sweatpants and slouchy sweaters. Our bestseller range of super-soft sweat blouses and sweatpants from My Essential Wardrobe are available in a range of neutral colours so that you can mix and match, or wear as a matching set.

We hope this list makes the task of rebuilding your wardrobe even just a little bit less scary. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, but a good way to make sure you have the basics necessary to be able to put together an outfit for every occasion!
